Protecting Micronesia | Global Ideas
It's the small island-nations in the Pacific Ocean that suffer most from climate change: On the Marshall Islands, on Palau and other Micronesian islands, people are faced with steadily rising sea levels. Coasts are eroding and drinking water is becoming scarce. But the world is barely aware of the problem. In this island paradise, a fight against time has begun.

Saipan, Micronesia
Saipan is part of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Micronesia region of the Pacific Ocean. About 4 hours flying time east of Hong Kong. It is about 44 square miles and has a population of under 70000. At the American Memorial Park and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture in Garapan, an in-depth display explains the Imperial Japanese expansion into the Pacific that went unchecked until Pearl Harbor. On June 15 1944 the United States Marines landed on the beaches of the southwestern side of the island and fought the Battle of Saipan against the Japanese. A task force had destroyed between 150 and 215 Japanese planes. The Marines fought hard and nearly all of the 30000 Japanese defenders were killed; Thousands of Japanese civilians also died, many threw themselves off Suicide Cliff. Also many natives jumped or were pushed off the cliffs by the Japanese soldiers who had spread propaganda that the concurring Americans would torture and maim the civilians. Today at Suicide cliffs there are many monuments placed by both Americans and Japanese acknowledging the bravery of those who lost their lives and a prayer that peace prevails in the future. Nearby is Banzai cliff where additional monuments are placed although there is some debate as to the belief that people actually plunged to their deaths there. Across the island are remains from the war. Japanese pill boxes and bunkers are peppered along the beachfront and near the airport ...

Micronesia/The Federated States of Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent, sovereign island nation, made up of four states from west to east: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. It comprises approximately 607 small islands in the Western Pacific spread over almost 1700 miles (2700 km) longitudinally just north of the equator some 2500 miles (4000 km) southwest of the main islands of Hawaii and about 1800 miles (2900 km) north of eastern Australia, lying northeast of New Guinea, south of Guam and the Marianas, west of Nauru and the Marshalls, and east of Palau and the Philippines. While the FSM's total land area is quite small, amounting to approximately 270 square miles (700 km2), it occupies more than 1000000 square miles (2600000 km2) of the Pacific Ocean. The capital is Palikir, the largest city Kolonia, both on Pohnpei. Each of its four States is centered around one or more main high islands, and all but Kosrae include numerous outlying atolls. The Federated States of Micronesia is spread across part of the Caroline Islands in the wider region of Micronesia, which consists of thousands of small islands divided between several countries. The term Micronesia may refer to the Federated States or to the region as a whole. The FSM was formerly a part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), a United Nations Trust Territory under US administration, but formed its own constitutional government on May 10, 1979, so becoming a sovereign state after independence was attained on November 3 ...
